Minecraft's Coordinate System Empty Minecraft's Coordinate System

Post by acsempronio 5/5/2011, 2:04 pm

I've noticed that when I reference coordinates people either get lost or suddenly don't care any more; Math isn't scary people.

For those who are uninformed the coordinate system works as follows (note that it is counter-intuitive to classic Cartesian coordinate systems.)

X-axis: This axis defines the South-North axis where negative values denote northward travel and positive values denote southward travel.

Z axis: This axis defines the East-West axis wherein negative values denote western travel and positive values denote Eastern travel.

Y axis: this axis denotes altitude, and is unimportant for map locations.

As of this posting, the Oasis is 9,000,000 square meters (3,000 meters, 3 Km squared) so the borders are each 1,500 meters from spawn in all directions with about a 5 meter internal buffer before the actual border.

So if coords are given or asked for, use them! Not everyone can TP (yet.)

Thank you for posting this, it should help anyone who might be confused about the coordinate system.

It also might be helpful to add that in order to view your coordinates (among other things) you must press F3 on your keyboard. Hopefully most people already know this.

This is definitely an interesting concept. Can't wait to see it's completion. On a similar note, have you heard about the maps notch is considering adding?

It's not a concept! It's been in the game since 1.3! Just sayin'!

Correction: Positive values are for WESTERN travel...

Because the game favors South-West orientation, North-East are negative values.

Just a note on this: Spawn is 0, 77, 0 on the map (77 again being your altitude), so if you ever want to find your distance from there, its quite easy.
