Idea: Redstone Wars Empty Idea: Redstone Wars

Alright, this is just an idea for a minigame and as it would probably require creative mode or something similar for players I can't really run it myself.
The idea is very similar to the build off minigame in that players get a topic for a redstone build. then they need to build a device within a time limit to follow that topic. At the end of a game, the players are judged based on how good their contraption is. For example, a topic could be something like "Locking Doors" the players would have a set amount of time to build nice looking functional doors with creative redstone locks.  At the end of the game, the player with the best lock would get a prize, or get to stand on a podium, or get to LOL at his/her opponents.
I think this would be a great opportunity to get players learning about redstone, or to get players who are already proficient with it to be more creative in designs.

I like this idea... it would get people more excited/involved in redstone stuff *-*
and the non-competitors could watch and gain experience as well

Just a coincidence, I guess. Anyhoo. Simply saying that I suggested this a year a go,

Zwall: Your ideas weren't bad, I just feel like this should be more similar to build-off to encourage creativity. One of the goals of this is to have people inventing new things without many constraints beyond staying on-topic.

Surv: I guess we could, but it has always seemed to me that build-off wouyldn't really be organized enough to accommodate something like this. if we add it as a build-off then we probably couldn't schedule the events or have set judges as easily.

Revilo: If we use creative I don't know that it should be part of redstone world (because it is a town on the old legit world).

I don't know where this could be hosted, maybe we could have a second build-off arena type thing in that world and just put it directly adjacent to the current build-off arena. I feel like if we were to make people play it with legitimately acquired items it could become rather limiting (I doubt I'm the only person who ends up using multiple inventories of things on a redstone build) and the goal is not bankrupting contestants.

I am all for this. I am a big redstoner my self, I am pretty good, when i am in the right mood.

I could easily make a build off area for this and add a warp and make the area creative and shit.

If we do this I just need to know one thing....is the build off arena big enough or would we need a bigger one?

I guess size would depend on what the builds are. if we have people doing projects like computers, calculators, mini games, ETC. then it would definitely need to be significantly bigger than the build-off arena. I guess having a bigger space can't hurt as the worst case would be that somebody would have unused space. plots in build-off arena are about 56x if I remember correctly, maybe this could be 75 or 100x per plot. (this meaning a 100x100 square) other than that layout could look similar to build-off arena.  For size reference my binary adder occupied about a 50x70 space, and I can see other things easily taking more room than that did.

Redstone has always been that one thing hardly anyone thinks about except the inventory space it takes up while mining. I think this concept can really change that common misconception and really make people use their imagination in their circuits. I applaud this idea, good show, sir. This is something I know I would personally participate in.

I'm not knowledgeable about redstone whatsoever mind you, but couldn't some of this stuff take an inordinate amount of to complete, stuff like computers, or rock paper scissors sorta stuff. I would think that some of the challenge of this would be completing a functioning ANYTHING within a time limit. The other day i made one of those halls from the Bat Cave where it gradually gets higher and at a certain point, the ceiling seperated to let you ride out like a badass on a horse and it took me at least an hour to do. Even though its a simple circuit, the key is to take every variable into consideration. Really, the biggest challenge isnt improvising redstone wizardry but doing it in such a way that it is EFFICIENT. That could be one of the criteria judges take into account, efficient usage of time and materials.

We could do a 24hour time frame for some of the things that would be bigger projects.

Don't worry guys, if I'm able to get this up and running, I plan on giving multiple hours to build.  Depending on if it's really complex, I may even give like 5 hours to build something.  I think for typical ones I'll give like 2-3 hours so people can experiment to find what works best.

We could do a 24hour time frame for some of the things that would be bigger projects.
perhaps we could host different difficulties/time frames, because I'm sure there are some people who would want to get involved in this, but don't want to give up something like 24 hours. But still keep the big hardcore ones for people who have the time, and have some shorter ones for people who don't have the time. Exactly what I was thinking, Xhoblo.  As far as getting the game approved, I'm already on that.  I just need Pax to verify if it is okay to have spawned redstone in the chests for the players.
Note to all, if it is approved, don't steal from the chests.  It can be traced back to you; and you know what that means.

Alright! Good news! The setup is almost complete!  For final parts of development, I do have a favor to ask of anyone who reads this:

Go to Voltage, get a minecart, turn left, and got to he trident.  Ride the railway to the skyplots.  When you get there, turn right and follow the edge of skyplots until you get to a field with torches.  Turn left.  You should she a small cobble wall covered with signs, the Ruleboard.
Read the rules, then please tell/mail/post me on if you think the rules, kit, field, and general game are and any improvements you can think of.
