I'm fairly new to the whole PC minecraft thing, as well as SMP servers, I don't know how to get around a gigantic map such as the ones PC has, and last thing I want is to lose the very place I reside

Two things.

1. For an easy tp to a home you can do /sethome (name of home) when you are at your home, which will allow you to tp back to that spot by doing /home. 

2. In order for your warp to be considered you must apply using the proper format which can be found here,
