Re: new laptop
I simply use a Dell Inspiron 17R big screen. It works very well for gaming the sticker on it even says "even more pixles for finer details" and has incredable audio plus it has a MASSIVE hardrive. Mine can support minecraft around 10-30 times without problems. The only time i eve lag on minecraft is when staff screws up a world edit or command and i have no lag at all when i play battlefield online
Mine is a multi purpose laptop for gaming and work and works better then most laptops will.
Just stating my opinion but don't buy an Acer, why i'v had 3 of them and they get viruses so easy and they just cannot support large cames like call of duty and minecraft ti the point where there is almost no lag. Not only for the reasons stated above but also they are very expensive and not worth it. just get a Dell Insperon big screen or something like mine you will have plenty of data to play massive games and still have tons of room for even bigger games

Re: new laptop
Acer E1-472G-6844
That seems like it would work alright. With the i5 and 620m it will be able to run minecraft easily and COD will work with some settings turned down. The only real problems I see are that it ships with a very slow hard drive (you can upgrade that on your own later.) And it has a 1366x768 screen resolution, which isn't a big deal if you can tolerate it.
On the topic of viruses, I want to emphasize that if your computer gets viruses it isn't the computer's fault. Get AVG or some similar antivirus program and exercise common sense with what you're downloading.

Okay, everyone has their own taste and choice.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:It works very well for gaming the sticker on it even says "even more pixles for finer details"
Lol what.. I hope you know a sticker on it doesn't mean it's true.
I mean, I could put a sticker on my old desktop which says: This computer is amazing.
But it's not, it's a 7 year old brick.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:and has incredable audio plus it has a MASSIVE hardrive.
Skullcandy, nope. Hoped for Bang & Olufsen or ONKYO orso. Or maybe even Bose, or Sennheiser. But no, Dell apparently made a deal with Skullcandy.
And about the harddrive, I don't know what you call massive. But I'm finding standard sizes of 320 GB and 500 GB. These days that is really tiny.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:Mine can support minecraft around 10-30 times without problems.
Laptops/computers these days should be able to do that yes.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:The only time i eve lag on minecraft is when staff screws up a world edit or command
That is actually server lag, not your computer/fps. It's the connection with the server, the minecraft .cmd file.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:and i have no lag at all when i play battlefield online
If you mean the "Play4Free Battlefield". It's not a heavy game, try to run Battlefield 3/4 on ULTRA settings.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:Mine is a multi purpose laptop for gaming and work and works better then most laptops will.
I highly doubt that, if the item of "best laptop of the year 2012" is true. I have bad news for you.
Especially if it is a "Multi purpose" laptop.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:Just stating my opinion but don't buy an Acer
Your opinion, but... your arguments. Nah.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:why i'v had 3 of them and they get viruses so easy
I hope you are joking? I've had an Acer, my mum had an Acer and we've never ever had problems with viruses.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:and they just cannot support large cames like call of duty and minecraft ti the point where there is almost no lag.
They can, these days most laptops have the possibility to adjust the amount of power which goes to a certain application.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:Not only for the reasons stated above but also they are very expensive and not worth it.
Depends on where you buy it and what you buy, this is very biased and not logic to say.
ThunderTheW0lf wrote:just get a Dell Insperon big screen or something like mine you will have plenty of data to play massive games and still have tons of room for even bigger games
Actually, don't. Best thing to do is to custom build one.

On topic of the Acer E1-472G-6844.
If I was you I would save some more cash and buy at least a laptop with a 1080p screen. Also at least the nVidia Geforce GTX 780M, it's a decent price. 1 year old at the moment, but works good.
It's 3 AM now, I'm going to bed. Maybe I will edit this later, or jeroen will post something. But for now...
Custom build, please. Do it. You can always ask us for help, Vitality has a custom build, I have a custom build, Leagle has custom build and Mike is going to. We are happy to give you advice.

Re: new laptop
My current machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T430 with an Nvidia Optimus card (model 2347 A39). This laptop consists of:
Ivy Bridge i5 (quad core) clocked at 2.6Ghz
8 GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM (2x4GB)
736 GB of SSD storage (256 SSD for boot drive, 480 GB SSD for steam and other media)
Nvidia OPTIMUS 5400M (equivalent to a GTX 660)
All of this is plenty fine for me. Except for the graphics card. I can barely play Far Cry 3 at 1366x768 and this machine takes FOREVER to render 720p videos.
The laptop itself cost roughly 2000 dollars (including the software that came with it). My new desktop will cost me roughly $1500. View my future system's specs here.
TLDR don't get Dell IMHO. ACER is fine, ASUS is fine, hell ANY brand of computers is fine. As long as you get one with what you are looking for, then you should be OKAY.
Except E-machines. Those things suck major ass. Do not buy. Ever.

Completely agree on that. Dell laptops I've looked at (and one I owned) seem to have generally bad build quality, which I think is one of the most important things in a laptop.

Look im just going on from what i know and based on my past experiences. I was just giving my personal opinion based on what i know. Iv gone through 3 acers due to viruses caused by stiff i never downloaded nor did any1 in my family. Stuff randomly downloaded overnight causing massive viruses and eventually left to all 3 having to be thrown out cause even computer programmers couldn't save them
and for the record krazo, that picture is of the standard Inspiron 17r with 3rd gen tech,
mine is a Inspiron 17r big screen core i5, 5th gen tech, mine is full HD and mine has the biggest available hardrive on the market, plus has all the highest end stuff in it (everything) so mine can be considered a "custom" pretty much the only part that was not put in by me was the frame of the inspiron, everything else is custom built so i do kinda know what im saying

Everything but the chassis you did yourself?ThunderTheW0lf wrote:mine is a Inspiron 17r big screen core i5, 5th gen tech, mine is full HD and mine has the biggest available hardrive on the market, plus has all the highest end stuff in it (everything) so mine can be considered a "custom" pretty much the only part that was not put in by me was the frame of the inspiron, everything else is custom built so i do kinda know what im saying
I have to say I'm impressed. I would never have the testicular fortitude to get a new motherboard to fit into a proprietary form factor laptop chassis, then solder the GPU in (by the way, I'm curious as to where you got a laptop GPU and what you used that was superior to the HD8870m and had manageable temps in that build). Also, how capacious is the "biggest hard drive on the market?" Is it a 5400 or a 7200rpm? Benchmarks would be cool. Or did you go and get one of those snazzy 1tb SSDs? Also wondering about the i5, I mean if you're already doing everything custom and have a source for laptop parts wouldn't an equivalent i7 have worked fine in the same socket?
Sorry, I'm not trying to be a dick (none of us are) we just want to have a good discussion on this and make sure that the best advice is given, and we're all speaking from different experiences.

Re: new laptop
I'd say go for the Acer, they are known for having some good laptops for gaming, such as the one I currently use, the Acer Aspire 7560-sb416. I've had it for a little over 2 years, and I can play all sorts of games on it with ease (sometimes there's lag but that's mostly because of my crappy wireless internet). Minecraft, Borderlands 2, Payday 2, etc. And it was for a really good price, I got it from Walmart for around $600 (and that included a 2 year warranty and protection plan with that price).
It has:17.3 " screen, AMD Quad core Processor that can do up to 2.30 GHz., 4 GB of RAM, 500 GB hard drive (I've downloaded a ton of games and it's still not even close to using up all my memory, but in case I ever do I also have an external hard drive). The video card is an AMD Radeon HD 6520G with 512 MB Graphics System Memory. It's a decent video card for a laptop and I can play most games with it. Plus it has a dvd player and a built in webcam and mic.
Since you're looking at the latest stuff, I bet they have Acers that are more up to date than mine. But in my experience, Acers are pretty good forgreat price.

If you are so over the top about your machine, why not give us the specs instead of saying your machine is the best. Cause I don't believe you.
And stuff does not randomly download in the night causing massive viruses. Computers can be saved, you don't have to throw them away.
You basically said the same as what you said before. And you keep talking about the same standard stuff without giving details and such.
Therefore I made the conclusion, regarding the same talk and the virus thing (really man), you have no idea what you are talking about.
Do you know what custom build means?
(Im not angry or anything, im rather surprised and trying to help)

"Stuff randomly downloaded overnight causing massive viruses and eventually left to all 3 having to be thrown out cause even computer programmers couldn't save them"
Hey, look man. Stuff does not just download by itself, it's not how things work. Also, viruses are really the least of your concerns, except if it's cryptolocker. Either, A) Run an antivirus (Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, etc.) or just reinstall your OS.
Choose either and you are A-ok.
Also, Acer are hardware vendors, not software. That means that they give you the computer and if it works, that means that they did their job right. It's the user's/vendor's falt (i.e. you or Microsoft) if anything goes wrong on the software side.
I own 3 Acer laptops, all of them still jugging as the day I bought them. None of them show the signs that you stated (unsaveable due to viruses and all that jazz).
I am not here to attack you or anything of the sort. You tried to give advice to a fellow member, which is good in the intentions it has, but it's malicious advice because you are not very well educated at the matter on hand. That's why I stray of foreign-politics and such, because I don't want to say something that is malicious and/or not fit for the discussion.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert at anything here, but I use Dell Inspiron 15r, with 15 1/2in display and an Intel HD Graphics card. I know its not the best out there, but here is a list of games I can play, and honestly, that's more than enough for me. Plus, this laptop is only $700, so it's pretty low on the price factor.

Aside from the CPU being only 1.6GHz (I highly prefer 2 GHz and above. anything less is horribly slow to me) I say very nice laptop. i5's usually perform great, 8GB of RAM is AWESOME, and I'm sure the GT 820M will play most games on medium at least.
I've got a Compaq Presario CQ57 as my laptop. However, I've replaced it's horrible 1.5GHz Celeron B800 with a splendid 2.1GHz i3 and upgraded the RAM to 8GB. Still no match for my beastly desktop computer though.
If you plan on buying it online, the MSRP for it is $599.99. Don't go above that. That is the right price for that laptop and any like it imo.

Oops.. mine was €1600,-

Re: new laptop
I would get the Acer. They are a reputable company and are not trying to force you to pay for an overpriced machine. The Acer you have specced will be just as good as the Alienware.
Re: new laptop
health the thing is, if you buy alienware, your basically just paying for the name. There are people on these forums that could build a better desktop than alienware for a cheaper price. Ik you want a laptop, that was just an example since you cant build a laptop....lol.
IF.........I ever bought alienware, i would google all the parts and check on the quality of all its main parts. Just because it has a bad ass cpu, doesnt mean that the mobo or video or memory or every thing else is good as well.
Alienware just basically puts out Eyecandy.....there that basically sums it up.

Big fan of Asus! Great company imo.
But yeah, as everyone stated, Alienware's not worth the money. Especially that model you mentioned. If you're looking for a little extra performance and are willing to pay extra, go for the Asus G75 Gweedo mentioned. More GHz to the CPU over the Acer, same amount of RAM and great graphics chips.
EDIT: You may also want to consider these MSI laptops MSI's a decent brand, I believe better than Acer in regard to product quality anyway.
That $1099 Laptop is one I strongly recommend. That 2.8GHz is good for gaming. Way better than what the Acer is offering- which I know for a fact will be unsuitable for gaming.
Re: new laptop
thing is i only have $600-$700 to spend.. ok so the AlienWare is out ... so im guessing the Acer? unless someone finds a better laptop for same price or cheaper.. Thanks guys for your opinions i am taking them seriously though so dont *please dont* give false info .. Thanks again :D
