Why are languages so shunned in Oasis?
Why do people get yelled at (or banned) for speaking in a language they love, is it harmful? no. So why make it taboo? just because?

The general idea is that most, if not all our staff speak only english. So if some one is using another language, we have no idea what they are saying. We have had other players come on and just be absolutely filthy in another language. And we had no idea, till another player that spoke that language came on.

And for us to goto google translate and type the phrase in, is a bit more work than i expect my staff to do honestly.

Im not really a fan of the rule, but its there so that players cant abuse other languages on the server.

Well how come when a certain staff is on who speaks the language, why can't we speak it?
Like my brother, with Yiddish or Spanish, he speaks or understands most of both. Plus it's not like we're cursing all day, we're not immature. I still don't see how it's bad to immerse yourself in a language. Also, it's not like it's important if someone curses in another language when nobody understands them, it's only a curse word once you learn it

Imo:
it's annoying when you look at chat and can't understand anything in it. It may make people feel excluded. It's great y'all can speak other languages, but those who can't speak it may feel left out of chat. I start tuning out chat after a while for that reason, since I can't understand more then a few words of it. I don't mind it every now and then, but it starts getting excessive after a point.
I feel it's none of my business what people chat about in other languages tho, so I try not to bring it up.

That being said, there are many people who have been breaking that rule repeatedly, so it's odd to see only one person punished for it. or punished at all [shrugs]

Think of it like this...

we allow multi languages on the server.

Lets say a couple of german kids are on and they are speaking german, and dont know english.

Then some one comes on who speaks german and english.

They instantly see that the others are being absolutely nasty in german, and that player is being offended by it.

They tell the staff that what they are saying is bad.

Now my staff has to goto google translate and start typing in what they are saying because you cant copy/paste chat from MC.

This is where it becomes more work, cuz i've tried my self. And this was long before mc had chat logs.

And all the while they are on google translate trying to figure out what they are saying is legit bad, there are other problems going on that need attention while they are thumbing around on google translate trying to figure out what they said. Cuz honestly, not gonna go on the players word 100%. Its not that hard to just lie and say "HEY THEY ARE CURSING IN SPANISH" and they actually might not be.

And yes it is important if some one is cursing in another language. If its important in english, its just as important in any language. Dont want any one to be offended regardless of the language they speak.

Area you saying that all spanish speaking players have to deal and listen to cursing and filthy language just because my staff cant speak spanish? And yes i know your bro speaks spanish, its just an example.

Staffing the server means tending to ALL players. ANd if they dont speak english, unfortunately, its hard to help them.

And just because I dont know the word for FUCK in german doesnt mean its not a curse word and gives some one the right to use it.

Its not bad to immerse your self in other languages, its making it harder for my staff to do their job if others are speaking another language they dont know. Thats the bottom line here. And it makes it a lot more difficult for all of us in the end.

Trust me, I dont like the rule, never have. But it does have some good to it. And trying to staff a multilanguage server is a lot more work.

Thats exactly one of the main reasons it's agaisnt the rules. I have known only English my whole life and I can count the words I know in other languages on one hand.

For example someone comes on and starts speaking German (just an example nothing against you Germans) how am I suppose to know what they are saying, for all I know they may swearing like theres no tomorrow or even trying to say nasty things about me or anyone online. From what I remember I think about 3 or 4 of the current staff speak multiple languages. Not only is it annoying to players who only know one language but it will cause problems for the staff.

The rule is there for a reason and it is enforced because of the problems it causes

I see what you're saying,
However, thunderhorse and Izumi4kona, I don't agree with either of you. We all find things annoying, yeah it's banned I get it, Pax explained it perfectly, however I find it extremely annoying when people type like "I wuv you" or "I cant beweev it :(", or when people roleplay, however I don't ask for them to ban it, that's unfair to freedom of speech. Yes, I know languages aren't for the chat, but because YOU find it annoying, it doesn't mean everyone does.

FUN FACT, Germans dont have a word for the f bomb, so instead they either use the english one or a corruption of shit. The more you know, right

That aside, I believe the justification behind the rule has been proven now. All Im going to say is that yes, using multiple languages can be fun and all in chat, but its best in small doses. I recall a player (with an unintentionally naughty name) who would always log on and say "czesch", and I personally tend to say hello in a few different languages. Lets try to keep it like that, yes? Use our own discretion.

Hell, when we do it like that, it can be a learning experience for everyone, not just an exclusive thing. Its not the most stringent rule we're talking here.

SQUIRTY_GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah I remember her. She was czeschaslovakian (SP?), not totally, prolly just partly and only greeted people like that to show her heritage. She probably didnt even know how to speak Czech.

At any rate, just to let you guys know, me and the staff are discussing this rule and we'll let everyone know the out come once we come to a decision. Just so you dont think we're blowing it off.

Which is why I said " imo" and not "everyone thinks", and that's the reason why I don't bring it up in chat. Plus, I only said it's annoying to me when it's excessive - As are the other things you mentioned. Nothing I said was meant as an attack or a wish to ban your speech freedom. I was simply expressing my feelings regarding the chat as of late; sorry if it came off aggressive or negative.

I don't mind when people are speaking in other languages with the explanation of what they said, kind of like a learning lesson... I find it interesting in moderation. However when all that is going on is conversation in another language that only a handful of people can understand I find it exclusionary and wonder what they are talking about? What if I wanted to join in the conversation, I can't. I understand why the rule is in place. If you want to speak in another language open a party chat (actually not sure if this is available on 1.9 or not) with them, go on teamspeak... no need to do it in open chat.
