Sam....here is a list of some things to check....
1. DEFRAG. Most common problem. A lot of people even nowadays dont defrag like they should!

2. Free space on harddrive. People download tones of music, pics, n movies amongst other things (legal or not) and dont clean house after wards. Make sure there is plenty of free space on your harddrive. I think 20% free is good. Unless you have a mega-giga-tera harddrive!

3. How many apps are you running at one time? I have had people bring me pc's to fix cus their slow, and its because they are running yahoo, msn, twitter, email, and any other chat clients and any thing else under the sun at 1 time. Now newer machines probably can handle all that now. But if yours is older, close some down.

4. Antivirus/firewall/security suites. If you have an older machine, the newer versions of these types of software will hog your cpu. Try using free legit versions from different companies. Do a search for "list of FREE Antivirus" or what ever your looking for. I use to use commercial versions but I cant afford to purchase a newer pc all the time, so I started using these freebies from legit companies like Avast (antivirus) that dont over BLOAT their software!

5. Updated drivers/software/windows/linux....I should have had this one higher in the list like 4 or something. Try updating your sofware/drivers on your pc! It wont hurt! That I know of!

Now if non of these help then its most likely a hardware issue!

6. Internet Lag? Your lag, if its internet lag (you can tell the difference, FPS lag the screen stops responding, internet lag you can still move and do things but nothing drops when you mine it, and mobs dont move) then try resetting your router and modem by unplugging the power from both for 30 secs. then power on the modem first. wait for it to start completely up, and then power up the router (assuming you have one). One more thing to add here is that it could be a bad cable if your network is wired. I havent seen this but I have heard that changing it could fix it if its bad.

Now we are going in side the pc!

7. Hard drive could be failing or bad sectors on it. Run checkdisk (google it) to repair bad sectors. Your minecraft files could be on those bad sectors in the hard drive (dont ask what sectors are please....not going that deep). If its a failing hd, to find out you will have to goto the manufacturers web site and download their tool (most have em) and run it. It will test the hd and tell you if its bad! You will have to replace it.

8. Memory! Could be going bad. I have had 1 stick of 256mb (yes..256mb guys...it was a while back) go bad. Sometimes bad memory will keep a pc from booting. But not all the time. Sometimes the pc will still see it and think everything is fine. The memory test the pc does during POST is not 100%.

9. Network card going bad. Rare but it can happen! I have a friend whose outside cable lines got struck by lighting and went in the house and hit his PC. Strangely it did no harm to the pc itself....but it did fry his network card. He was able to get on the net somehow but it was very ssssslllllloooooowwwww. Like we were back on dial up again! (Dial up? Whats that? Again...google it if you want to know)

10. Last and not least.....failing motherboard! But you would be having other issues if it was this. But still something you shouldnt ignore! No test for it! Just have to change it out! Hope for the best!

Enjoy n have fun! Smile

In my opinion, the lag is either your graphics card or your internet connection. Check both, and restart your PC just to be on the safe side. If the lag is from your graphics card, your framerate will be choppy. If the lag is from your Internet connection, you'll notice a delay between mining blocks and them dropping the actual block.

Hope this helped!

Mad, your reply would make more sense if he's always had lag issues! Be according to him it's just recent!

I didn't consider optifine! That would be the easiest one to do first! But it's more than likely defragging!
