Starting a server

Post by brickhunter1 on 8/22/2012, 11:20 pm

So, a bunch my friends in my school play minecraft, and I want to create a white list invite only server that can go through the whole city, so people don't have to come to my house to play. I was looking at mcprohostingllc, but I don't know how far the signal travels and if it is vanilla. And yes I would prefer to buy a host than to risk my computer blowing up trying to run a server. I would also like bukkit to put in plugins like big brother JUST IN CASE my friends decide to go on their griefing ways. Since oasis is the best public server EVAR, I was wondering what kind of things you use to run a server. Thanks.

Server hosting basically works like this:

You pay a certain amount every month and that company basically let's you use their computer. You can connect to said computer via Remote Desktop Connection, which is control that computer over the internet.
The cost per month depends on the quality of the computer. The stronger the computer, the more the cost obviously. They can range anywhere between $30(is the lowest, quality server I've seen) to something in excess of $250, which would be a for a huge server.
Some server hosting companies give you the option of having a pre-set up server, with bukkit installed and whatever plugins you want. Others allow you to set it up yourself however you want.
Your friends would connect to the server just like you, typing in the IP. It would be just like connecting to Oasis.

Is there a bukkit hosting server that you would reccommend? Or any hosting service? Or are they pretty much the same and I should just pick one.

you really want to pay monthly so that you and a couple of friends can build a city?

It will be more than a couple friends, but yes. My computer can't handle a server, and hosting sounds pretty easy. Why not?

It will be cheaper and easier for you to have them play here than to pay and make your own server, might I add.

And more fun ofc. Build away from spawn like a smart child and you won't get griefed. I've been griefed to the extent of calling staff once or twice in my history of over 1 year on this server. The most damage ever done over time to me was probably endermen. Lesson is: build away from spawn and you won't have to complain about griefs like the stupid people who live in sight of spawn. They don't even move their house after multiple griefs and every time they are amazed as to how someone could have walked a couple hundred blocks and magically used their fist to break their windows. Of course you're smarter than that so I assume you live farther from spawn.

I go with the opinion of having them here.

Yes, it may lag, but why pay when you have it free?

I've had three years of experience running my own server with multiple hosts, and I'd recommend beastnode as the host, it's by far the most quality and affordable server host I've found, ever since brohost got hijacked and shut down anyways. Running a server can be kind of tricky, especially if you want a bunch of plugins, so if you need any help feel free to ask me. Good luck with your server :p

Ok Ok guys, I love Oasis as much as you do, but the thing is, Oasis is shared by many many people who some might feel awkward talking to and playing with. The great thing about a private server with lots of friends is that you can just let everything out and chill after school while still staying in touch with them. Some people might not even be allowed on a PG-13 server, so this is a safe but fun zone for them. Yes, I will continue to advertise oasis, but I feel like this will be a great way to connect people across my city who already are connected through me, so it won't be as awkward. Again so you guys don't spam me with Oasis ads: I FRICKIN LOVE OASIS! but this is different.
EDIT: Found DaddyCheese, sounds legit. Anyone know anything about them?
