Suggestion to cut down on stealing

Post by Jaccerz on 3/14/2016, 9:27 pm

So, the server uses lockette, which people have to lock with a sign, So to make it easier for staff, and to cut down on people going into unlocked chests and stealing, why not swap to LWC ?? it will auto lock the chests on placement, its easy to add those who you want to access it to to it, AND there is a server config file for it where you can make it lock furnaces hoppers and a few other things.

Just to go into more detail, it can auto lock chests, furnaces, dispensers, doors, trap doors, gates and it can also lock signs.

having signs auto lock, means if people find a spawner, they can put a locked sign on the side of it, and now no one can break that spawner.

The only question I can really think about with this is if hoppers will still work with "locked" chests. Using a hopper on a chest with Lockette won't work, so would this?

no, you would need to use unlocked chests for that. but thats about the only time, any fear of griefing would happen.

We used to have LWC back in 1.6 beta (circa summer 2011) but we dropped it in favor of Lockette for reasons I do not know (I was not part of staff team back then). We've had Lockette ever since.

At any rate judging by the documentation from LWC, it claims you can set any block up to be locked. Sounds to me that it would be possible to configure LWC to treat a hopper as a block (because it is a block after all) and that you'd be able to private/lock it.  So in theory.... redstone stuff should work with LWC. (Keyword there is "should"...)

nah, it wont, cos hoppers will be locked out of the chests... thats the only issue with it.

edit*

just found this in core.yml

denyHoppers: true

that right there might be why hoppers dont work with the locked chests, but it could also mean if enabled, people could place a hopper under a chest and empty it :/

I doubt if hoppers were enabled for protection that another user (who didn't place and lock the hopper in the first place) would be able to place their own chest and retrieve items from the locked hopper. I think that the locks would clash and LWC would refuse to drop the items in the first place.

Can you think of any other concerns?

yeah. i know when hoppers in minecarts first came out, you could place a rail under a chest and put the cart on it and empty the chest. which is why i think that one line from the config file is set to deny hoppers

in saying that, for a new user to come on who isnt a member or above, they would have to go out, farm iron, cook it, make the rail, cart, hopper in order to grief.

This is one of the tests I would run with LWC. It's probably fixed at this point but I can't say with 100% confidence until I work with the plugin and test it out.

Hopefully it's super customizable and may end up being one thousand times better than Lockette, but that's just with high hopes. Still sounds a bit promising though.

it is better than lockette....

you can set timers so doors close after so many seconds, just like lockette,

it just means people dont have to have signs everywhere.

Which that would help with a storage system, or semi-auto storage system, I have in mind for the next map. But it's mainly on hoppers and eventual bugs with the plugin itself.

We'll just have to wait and see.
