Biome Warps (For Science) Empty Biome Warps (For Science)

Post by Guest 9/6/2013, 6:06 am

"Is there a hills biome warp?"
"There should be an extreme hills biome warp"
"I haven't found one swamp on this map"
"Coordinates to a swamp biome?"

I was bored at 4am so I flew around world borders. Remembered some of the above quotes, and wondered why we never had more biome warps... so I decided to add two warps for empty  hill and swamp around the world borders. There are no "magical portals" to them from Spawn, but the warps work. I want to see if having more biome warps would be a good/bad idea for future... especially seeing 1.7 might include more biomes ._. (Though it's probably a long ways away from now) so this is partly for science I: I shall monitor the warps each day like the biome portals.

Also made a mining/base-camp warp near world border far away from builds, a lot of unexplored things there. Bases can be built on the stonebrick floors surrounding the warp, and mining can be done through any walls. Was planning to keep this a personal warp for whenever I felt like mining, but figured It might be a good place for others to mine as well since it's in a relatively unexplored part of the map. There's a room full of anvils and an ender chest there.

All three warps are protected like the normal biome warps, except the region protected is a lot smaller. This map is huge and there a tons of unexplored areas, especially near its borders.

Go crazy xD

I really don't know if this is a good idea or not.  I mean, sure it will bring more traffic to the few swamp and hill biomes we have on Oasis, but more traffic means more buildings, and the more buildings there are, the less natural beauty there is.  I am one who likes good looking buildings, but loves just running around in the natural beauty that is Minecraft even more.  I feel that with having a warp to these biomes, people will go crazy and build a lot nearby so there is very little natural beauty.

True Minecraft can look really nice natural but it is a game about building. A lot of people can't find areas to build, the more biome warps the better in my opinion.

Biome Warps (For Science) Empty Re: Biome Warps (For Science)

One of the main problems is laziness, people walk out of a portal and boom they have to build right there. Ok I understand you need a small place to gather supplies I get that, ok build your small hut get your supplies and get a compass, don't really need a map ok now take compass and have it point at your house now run in the opposite direction till you think you are far enough then run for hours more you will find new places nobody is at. There is several swamps and extreme hills biomes, I know I have found several. My current town /warp gsp is in the middle of one. People have to be willing to walk the map when I see someone say I am bored I fly over and find they have never left their house or never been past 500 blocks of their house. Oasis is 16 thousand blocks across, take an adventure, go on a walk discover what is on the next hill or beyond the next forest. Minecraft is about discovering what the map has for you to see. The portals are a starting point they are not designed to have huge amounts of people living near them. Take your compass and food go out and find something new. You wont realize it but you wont be  bored anymore.

Fast forward a month and every 100 block radius of every biome portal will be fucked up.

This is a survial server. if you cannot find any new biomes, then you're doing it wrong!
Exploring is a big part of the survival. Which is why we kept the portal ammount limited with our currient spawn. To promote exploring!

Mhm... I agree with everything that has been said here.

I'm guessing there is a reason we can't just make the biome protected areas a lot bigger?

Yea we're gonna make the whole map protected, only nature from now on, screw everything.

This is why it is for science .3. I want to see how this would go. If there are more biomes in 1.7 to the point where adding more portals would ever be considered, this experiment might give insight on the outcome of increasing the amount of portals.
It might be a bad idea, or it might end up good; this is also why I limited it to only 2 biome warps near the borders in unexplored areas. There's a ton of space on borders that no one bothers to look at or even consider. I figured if anything it'd give people an easier way to jump there and explore from those points to find a good build spot.
This map is huge compared to 1.5's.... It's almost like having two maps in one, on 1.6 alone. So I figured this be the time to experiment if any.

tl;dr : I'm not saying we should have a warp for every single biome or a warp point in every corner of the map, but I want to see the effects of adding two more on this map. I'm not suggesting this as anything permanent in maps to follow, but it might give insight on what would happen. I'm not adding anymore warps then this, since it's experiment.

(....Hills are pretty *-*)

The other thing you have to consider is the more warps/portals we have. The more GRIEFABLE areas there are for griefers to grief. Why do you think we tell players when they exit the portals to RUN FAR FAR AWAY from the portals. Most legit greifers dont run far far away to grief something. They just want to destroy something. If we have more warps and portals, that means more areas for staff to cover. We would have to patrol those areas as well (and by we I mean you because you live on oasis 12+ hours a day <3)

All in all, I was for this idea at one time. I wanted portals for the other biomes. But once I started doing the 12+ hour patrol around the 4 main portals and fixing a crap ton of griefs, and spending most of my time fixing things rather than playing. It got old really quick. MAYBE warps for other biomes. But that there is a pain in the butt as well. Cuz then when we reset maps, we have a crap ton of warps that we have to go through to figure out which ones are valid still and which ones need deleting.

Its just more hassle than its worth in the end.

I think I agree with what Pax has said, when you think about it from staffs' point of view it is a lot of areas to patrol and becomes more hassle than good, if only griefers would vanish off the face of the earth... :P

I have a suggestion.. Can we make a little protected house around new warp points and private doors for trusteds?... It should decrease amount of griefs, though, it wont be fair..
